Why not school

Why school lessons are often not enough for 180+ scores

School teaches rules, but tests require context

Why school lessons are often not enough for 180+ scores

The English NMT is not simply a test of grammar knowledge. It is a standardised test of speed, concentration and the ability to understand the logic behind the test writers’ questions.

  • School teaches rules, but the test requires contextIn ordinary lessons, pupils often learn grammar tables by heart. In NMT tasks, synonym groups, phrasal verbs and fixed collocations play a key role, but there is rarely enough time to cover them at school.
  • Tricky distractors in the answer optionsEvery difficult question contains trap options that include familiar words from the text but distort its meaning. Without targeted practice, applicants can lose up to 20–30 points on them.
  • Lack of time and panic during readingEach task allows less than 90 seconds. If a student gets stuck on a difficult text, the remaining sections have to be completed by guessing due to a lack of specific speed-reading techniques.
  • No regular test practiceSchool tests do not recreate the conditions of electronic testing. Without full-length practice simulations, a teenager encounters real exam stress for the first time on the day of the exam.

How learning works at International House

We do not make students mechanically memorise tests. The programme is based on a communicative approach and systematic practice of practical exam skills.

We determine your level using the international CEFR scale and the target score for admission. This allows us to form groups at the same level and focus on the topics that will deliver the greatest score improvement.

FAQ

Questions and answers about test preparation

We have collected answers to the most common questions from parents and older pupils about timings, lesson format and the required starting level. If you have another question, request a callback and we will call you.

The ideal time is at the beginning of Year 10 or Year 11. In Year 10, there is time to raise your overall level to B2 without stress, while in Year 11 you can focus fully on the test format. For those short of time, we run intensive express courses immediately before the exam.
