CEFR levels

How can you find out your child’s level?

All IH courses follow CEFR levels, the international standard for language proficiency. Choose a level below to understand what your child can do at each stage.

Children aged 6–7 in a circle repeating words from flashcards
A1Starter
6+ years

The child knows only a few words or does not know the language at all. The first successful step is understanding simple greetings and naming objects around them.

What your child can do at A1

  • Say hello, introduce themselves and talk about themselves: name, age, a favourite animal or toy.
  • Understand short classroom instructions: “open your book”, “listen”, “draw”.
  • Name colours, numbers up to 20, animals, food, clothes and things at school and at home.
  • Answer “What is it?”, “How many?” and “Where?” with a word or a short phrase.
  • Sing songs, play games in English and read their first short words.

Level test

International House

Most schools teach to Cambridge standards. We helped create them.

International House World Organisation (IHWO)
  • International House World Organisation (IHWO)became a historic founder of modern language-teaching standards. Together with Cambridge English, we helped develop the professional CELTA and IHCYLT qualifications.
  • Co-creators of CELTAThe communicative approach pioneered by IH is now considered the gold standard and forms the basis of the most effective English language teaching worldwide.
  • Founded in 1953 (London)In Ukraine since 1993

Time to change the approach

Familiar situations?

Most parents who come to us are already tired of ineffective methods. We have created an environment where children really start speaking.

Has studied for years but remains silentQuickly loses interestCan pass tests but gets lost in conversationEnglish needed for the next stepLearning is constantly interrupted

They study for 4 years, but stay silent

An excellent pupil at school who knows all the tenses, but gets lost and blushes when a foreigner asks a question. Money and time have been spent, but most importantly, confidence has not grown. “I pay for knowledge, but my child is afraid to open their mouth.”

Method

How we achieve results

International House methodology has stood the test of time in 45+ countries. We focus on what matters most — the ability to communicate.

Rule 1

A communicative approach from lesson one

We do not translate texts or learn rules by heart. Children spend 80% of the lesson communicating in English — with the teacher, in pairs and in small groups. Go Getter, Prepare, High Note and other authentic Cambridge and Pearson materials.

Rule 2

Cambridge-certified teachers

All teachers go through a rigorous selection process and hold CELTA or IHCYLT — international certificates specifically for teaching children. IH Kyiv is one of 315 official Cambridge teacher-training centres worldwide.

Rule 3

Native speakers — more than just foreigners

Our native speakers are certified teachers (DELTA/CELTA) with many years of experience. They join the programme at A2+/B1, when children are ready for real communication.

Rule 4

Small groups — everyone gets attention

There are up to 8–10 pupils in a group. The teacher has time to speak with everyone. Children cannot sit back — they actively take part in every task, discussion and game.

Rule 5

Continuous and safe learning

We make sure nothing gets in the way of your child’s development. The school has modern fibre-optic internet and additional power supplies. In case of air-raid alerts, we also have a modern equipped shelter.
