What is the CELTA?
The Cambridge English Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults – CELTA – provides the initial training needed for new teachers to enter the EFL industry and essential for experienced teachers who wish to build on their existing skills.

The CELTA syllabus is set by Cambridge Assessment English and covers the following learning areas:

These are interactive, highly informative and very closely linked with classroom teaching. Some include:

Which CELTA course to choose?
There are essentially three possibilities to take CELTA: full-time, part-time, and online. And the choice is entirely up to you, your learning preferences, and your personal situation.
CELTA Full-time – also known as an intensive option.
It can be a very intense experience as it expects you to take in a lot of information and put it into practice straight away.
The typical full-time CELTA course involves 4 to 5 weeks, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 6 pm.
On top of that, you will have weekly assignments to complete.
You are more focused since you are full-time (and have little time to think of much else!).
It requires Total immersion!
There is very strong peer support since you spend most of the course together with other trainees.
The course is completed much faster than the other alternatives.
This option seems more intense and demanding than others.
The course requires you to take an entire month off ? basically, you will need to essentially ?pause? your life for a month.
You might need to move cities temporarily or decide to take the course abroad.
You will need to add accommodation fees and living expenses to the course cost.

A typical part-time course will take place over several months and will involve 3 to 6 hours of study per week.
The content covered is exactly the same, it?s just spread out over a greater length of time making it a less intense experience.
The typical part-time CELTA course involves 12 weeks, Friday (17.00-20.00) and Saturday (9.00-17.00)

🟢Ideal for those that need some flexibility to fit in around work or family.
🟢All the content is the same, but the pace is much different from the full-time equivalent.
🟢More time is given between teaching practices, input sessions, and assignments; so you have more time to reflect or experiment new techniques and approaches with current groups you teach.

Blended Celta Course:
It’s a convenient way of getting qualified as it involves blended learning. The courses follow a similar approach as the face-to-face courses, focusing on teaching practice, language awareness, methodology of language teaching and learning, written assignments and live online observations.
How does CELTA Online Work?
The virtual environment uses Cambridge CELTA Online platform allows trainees and teacher trainers to interact before, during, and after class.
All of the ?input sessions? are held virtually, and assignments are turned in online as well. As with the other alternatives, the course syllabus remains similar.
It will normally involve 100+ hours of online learning as well as time at the CELTA centre for face-to-face time with your course tutor and practical teaching practice for one or two days per week. You will still be required to physically attend a CELTA centre for course elements such as the teaching practice.
– Your input sessions involve reading, watching video lessons, interactive tasks
– You are required to participate in forum discussions and have live online sessions with your online tutor(s) and other course participants.
– Your work is monitored by your online tutor (s) and they facilitate your work through feedback and remarks on discussions

Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
CELTA can be taken both by people with teaching experience and by people with no teaching experience.
Teachers who have worked in more traditional, teacher-centered classroom environments are not necessarily at an advantage when they take the course. Similarly, inexperienced candidates are not necessarily at a disadvantage. The important thing is that all candidates are prepared to learn new approaches.
Many experienced teachers have taken the qualification in order to improve their teaching skills, provide them with a professional qualification and improve their overall confidence and English Language Teaching knowledge.
The course requirement is that your level of English is good enough to teach at a range of levels (up to CEFR 1 Level B2 / upper-intermediate level). This means you should have a level of English at CEFR high C1 / C2 level.
Normally, candidates taking Delta will have an initial English language teaching qualification, such as CELTA, and at least one year?s experience teaching English.

Many trainees who successfully complete CELTA speak English as a second or third language. However, your English should be proficient enough for you to cope with the demands of the course, ideally a C1 (Advanced) level. If you apply to do CELTA, the tutors will assess your English level carefully as part of the selection process.
You don’t need to start a CELTA course with a great knowledge of English grammar. However, you have to show that you can research and analyze grammatical structures so that you can teach them properly in the classroom.
No. People who have successfully completed CELTA courses range from being eighteen years old to be in their retirement. However, 18-year-olds are accepted at the discretion of the center.
CELTA is a teacher-training course, not a language-learning course. Do not apply for CELTA if you only want to improve the level of your English.
CELTA applicants should complete an application form and task-sheet. If their application meets the required standard, they will then be invited to an interview. Applicants who pass the interview will be offered a place on a CELTA course.

CELTA is very intensive. Trainees taking a full-time course should ensure that there are no other demands on their time and attention for the duration of the course.
Trainees put in a lot of hours each day into planning lessons, teaching, writing assignments and participating in class, which means they often have to put their social life aside so they can dedicate full days to achieving everything the CELTA expects of them. 100% attendance is required and you’re not just a student – you’re a teacher trying out what you learn, as well. You will have a great deal of help from your trainer
It is very risky to try to combine a full-time CELTA course with any sort of work commitment, even a part-time one. The majority of people who drop out of or fail a CELTA course do so because they have misjudged how demanding the course is; often those people have been trying to do some work on the side.
No. However, trainees will receive a lot of hand-outs during input sessions (and need to be organized when filing these hand-outs away).
The teaching practice comprises guided preparation, lesson performance and reflection on the lesson.Each trainee teaches for a total of eight 45-minute lessons with two groups of students at two different levels. Teaching practice is organized in small groups of 5-6 trainees who also observe each other.
Each teaching practice session is followed by a group feedback session, led by your course trainer, as well as a detailed, personalized written feedback and assessment of each lesson.
Teaching Practice classes may vary in size from six to about 18 students.
CELTA trainees are assessed on their teaching practice performances, their written assignments and their overall level of professionalism. CELTA is awarded to candidates who have completed the course and who have met the assessment criteria for lesson planning, teaching and for written assignments. The outcome of the course is decided on a continuous assessment basis, there is no final examination.
Trainees who complete the course will have a grade recommended by their course tutors. When this is approved, Cambridge English will send them certificates that state their official grade. It commonly takes Cambridge English six-to-eight weeks to send out official certificates

The application and interview procedure for CELTA is to ensure that candidates accepted onto a course have the potential to develop the skills necessary to pass it.
Therefore, the failure rate is not high.
However, CELTA is not a course where accepted candidates automatically pass.
Yes, successful CELTA candidates are graded as Pass, Pass B or Pass A (Pass A is the highest grade).
No, you will be assessed throughout the course. Assessment is on the 6 hours of teaching practice and the 4 written assignments.
The tutors will make recommendations about what the trainees need to do in future to ensure that they continue to develop as English-language teachers.
There will be a professional development session at the end of the course which includes advice on finding work after the CELTA course. However, International House Kyiv is unable to help trainees with individual job-hunting.
