Yep, it is that time of the year…that time when you turn on the radio and no matter which station you tune in; or wherever you go, all you’ll hear is Christmas songs!
From “Silent Night” and “Jingle Bells” to “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, we certainly have heard the most incredible variety of singers and bands that have recorded those tracks for special Christmas albums, and regardless of their music genre, it is usually an easy way to cash in and make it to the top 10 on the charts.
A good example of that is Australian Pop singer and songwriter Sia, who has just made it to “The Best Christmas Songs in 2017” list of U.S. magazine “Seventeen”. However, she does not fit the profile of an artist who would record one of those popular Christmas carols.
Most people may recall Sia from her biggest hit “Chandelier” released in March of 2014, which received 4 nominations for the 57th Annual Grammy Awards including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Music Video. Directed by Sia and Daniel Askill, and choreographed by Ryan Reffington, featuring 11-year-old dancer Maddie Ziegler, it has been viewed more than 1.7 billion times, becoming one of the most viewed YouTube videos ever posted.
Even before that, Sia has made important contributions to artists such as Beyoncé, Kylie Minogue, Flo Rida, Rihanna and Christina Aguilera whose 2009 album “Bionic” includes 3 songs co-written by Sia. Later in 2010, she would co-write “Bound to You” for the soundtrack of the American movie “Burlesque” starring Aguilera and Cher. The song was nominated for Best Original Song at the 68th Golden Globe Awards. And who has not sung from the top of their lungs the striking sentence “You shoot me down, but I won’t fall. I am titanium!”, from the chorus of David Guetta’s song Titanium? Well, the song was written by Sia, David Guetta, Giorgio Tuinfort and Afrojack and originally featured vocals by Mary J. Blige, which were later replaced by Sia’s without her permission. According to the singer, the song was written to Alicia Keys because she had just retired from being a recording artist and had no intention of being a pop star. She had begun a career as a songwriter and wanted to keep it like that.
It seems the universe had bigger plans for the artist though and despite her wishes of keeping a low profile, Titanium was a critically acclaimed hit and made it impossible for Sia to take a backseat on her singing career. Her latest album called “Everyday is Christmas” was released in November 2017 and the song “Santa’s Coming for Us” video features the joys of Christmastime in a very humurous and playful way. Starring lots of famous celebrities, comedians Kristen Bell (Gossip Girl / The Good Place) and Dax Shepard, who happened to be married in real life, star as the husband and wife of a massive family; Caleb McLaughlin (Stranger Things), Sophia Lillis (IT) and Wyatt Oleff (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) appear as the children; Henry Winkler and Susan Lucci show up as the grandparents; J.B. Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm) arrives down the chimney as Santa Claus. Definitely a breath of fresh air when it comes to Christmas jolliness, a very upbeat song that will make sure to put even the Grinches in a holiday mood!
